Expand Your Options with New Window and Split Window

QuarkXPress has long been limited to a one-file/one-window structure that made it difficult to view more than a single spread at one time. If a story on page 1 continued on page 10, for example, you couldn’t quickly see how formatting changes or edits affected the whole story. It also limited you to viewing one layout at a time, so you couldn’t drag items or pages between layouts or see how changes to a color affected the whole project.

Well, those days are over. Now, anytime you need to see more than one view, page, spread, or layout at a time, choose window > new window. This opens the project file in a separate window so you can change the layout or page that’s displayed, the view scale, and more. Make as many new windows as you need, using window > tile or window > stack commands to help manage them on-screen if necessary. When you’re finished, simply click the close box to hide the other windows.

In addition to creating new windows to juggle on-screen, you can simply split the active project window. Choose window > split, and then choose horizontal or vertical. You can display whatever you need in each portion of the window (figure 4). When you’re finished, choose window > split > remove all.

Real-World Application

So far, appending layouts has been handy for merging existing files into the same project and the ability to export and down-save a layout has been a lifesaver when working with QuarkXPress version 6.5 users. I vow, however, not to work in single layout mode. Don’t look back. You should never look back.
