Choosing a file format

There are eight file formats from which to choose. There are varying types of support for each of these formats, enabling you to choose the format that will yield results appropriate for the intended use. For instance, if you are exporting text from your QuarkXPress document so that it can be re-purposed for a web page, you may find that it's simpler to start with the HTML format — especially if you wish to retain some of the text formatting.

Plain text can be useful, for example, when you are using text of a small point size in Quark, but do not need the identical display in Word.

CopyFlow Gold processes composite text files. This means that you may have all of the text elements associated with a particular story (or article, chapter, and so on) in a single file.

While RTF is an option, it is not yet recommended for round-tripping. If you intend to export the text, then import it back into this document — round-tripping — the best text format is single XPress Tag file.

Figure 7 CopyFlow Gold, in its simplest form is an export/import tool and to that end, there are a number of file options for these processes. Each option is appropriate for a different use. Keep these in mind as you choose a file format.

When you choose XPress Tags or Single XPress Tags file, rules about using style sheets are honored by CopyFlow Gold: As long as you use the same name for corresponding Word styles and QuarkXPress style sheets, CopyFlow Gold will apply the appropriate attributes at import and export. If a paragraph style exists in Word but not in QuarkXPress — or vice versa — a style with the corresponding name will be created upon import or export. However, in either case, the attributes of the appropriate normal paragraph style will be applied to the definition of the new paragraph style.

Once you have named the boxes and chosen a file format, you are ready to begin the export process. From the CopyFlow Gold dialogue box, click export.

The first box that was found could not be named. In this example, it is because the first box is my background box and it has a content of none.
