CopyFlow Gold for QuarkXPress and InDesign
Page 7

For my Creative Quadrant export, I have chosen to export as a series of InDesign tagged files. This ensures that for my round-tripping process, the text will return with all style sheets and local formatting intact. The process starts with going to the preferences dialogue box and choosing your file format. You must instruct InDesign CS3 to apply your selected format by clicking the appropriate below directly below this drop-down menu. Depending on your selection, clicking this button will prompt two more dialogue boxes.

Figure 16 To define the settings for this export, in the preferences dialog box I chose Adobe Tag files, then clicked the establish tagged text import/export prefs button. From here, I can choose the encoding. I intend to translate this document to another language, that may have a different character set, so I chose Unicode for my encoding.

Making it a round-trip

CopyFlow Gold for QuarkXPress 7 and InDesign CS3Round-tripping is especially useful when you are doing a translation, as in my sample above, but it could be used as a part of an editing process as well. if you wish to bring your text back into the same document — thus, perform a round-trip — ensure that all of the translated or edited files are in the folder you wish to use for import and open the InDesign document. Open the CFG Tool palette, and use the import button to begin the batch-import process. Choose the folder where you have placed the previously exported (edited or translated files) and CopyFlow Gold will examine each named text frame and — if it finds import-able text of the currently selected format in the selected import folder — import the text into the text frames. If there is no file matching the name and format in the selected folder, no change will be made to the story.

Batch-processing capability

The CopyFlow Gold Plug-in for Adobe InDesign CS3 batch exports and batch imports text in separate or single RTF, Adobe tag, or plain text files. The batch folder script will prompt you to select a folder of InDesign documents to be processed, either batch export or batch import. The script will then process each InDesign document in the selected folder according to the settings you have defined.

In review

There may be as many different needs to export text from a document as there are user types. Archiving, translating, and repurposing for web, are but a few, but a very popular few. CopyFlow Gold, whether your favorite application is QuarkXPress or InDesign, is likely the simplest process for getting text out of — and, when needed, back into — your document. Priced at $495, it's a no-nonsense solution.
