Special considerations
The final menu within the Sonar Bookends Professional application is for special-processing options. Here are some highlights:
- You can eliminate noise words (e.g., the, and, of), from your word/phrase list through the use of a reference file that lists these words.
- Add characters to the alphabetic list that are not usually includes (e.g., %, !).
- Maximum consecutive page number abbreviation will enable the process to returns results such as 231-40, as opposed to 231-240.
- Smart hyphens will enable Sonar Bookends Professional to remove hyphens, thereby locating matches that might have been ignored because the hyphen prevents the match.

From this dialogue box, click OK. Sonar Bookends Professional will instruct you to locate the file for indexing — click OK to use a navigational dialogue box to select the file. If this is an index for a QuarkXPress or PageMaker document, you will now locate the file you created with the export to Sonar feature. If this is a PDF, you should navigate directly to the PDF. Select the file and click OK.
Preparing the file
Sonar Bookends Professional will now prepare the file and process the word/phrase list against the document or file that you have located. Another dialogue box will open so that you can track the process. If you have selected the option to preview the hits, another dialogue box will be displayed. At the top of this dialogue box (in the title area) is the word/phrase that is being located in the file. You can click the appropriate button to include or exclude that particular reference of the word.

Figure 13 Once you have selected the file for processing, Sonar Bookends Professional will prepare the file. You are presented with a dialogue box so that you can monitor the progress.
Once this process has run its course, a new dialogue box will appear. This is the final index and ready for you to import into QuarkXPress, PageMaker, Word, or any other publishing application. Simply save the file, import the text into your document for publishing, and throw some style sheets at it for formatting. Done!
