While it's true that Acrobat natively automatically activates some links, Sonar Bookends Activate sets the bar and continues to maintain its position as the most-advanced auto-activation Plug-in. Developed by Virginia Systems (also the makers of Sonar Bookends indexing and table of contents products), it is a good stand-alone solution or a good next step for those of you who create books and catalogues in a desktop-publishing application.
Installation
With the release of Acrobat 8, Adobe changed the installation process for Plug-ins. Without a successful install, we cannot explore the application. Let's take moment to walk through this.
If you are using a Mac, select the Acrobat application.
Press command + i (get info)
If it's not already visible, click the disclose arrow to display the list of

Click add
Navigate to the folder titled Sonar Bookends Activate.acroplugin for the version of Acrobat that you are using and click choose.

Figure 1 On the Mac, installs are handled in the get info dialogue box.
If you are a Mac user and you have performed the steps correctly, the Plug-in should be displayed as in figure 1 above. If it's not, do this:
From within Acrobat, go to Acrobat > preferences.
In the left pane, click general.
in the bottom right panel (application startup), uncheck (if it is checked) use only certified Plug-ins. Once done, your dialogue box should look like that shown below in figure 2.

Figure 2 While Sonar Bookends Activate is not usually an issue, some Plug-ins will not load if you are using the certified Plug-ins only option.
