Successful set up

If you have a document with page numbering other than consecutive beginning with page 1, you must set up the document correctly. To do this, choose thumbnail view, right click on one of the thumbnails, and choose number pages. Manually number these pages to match the numbers within the PDF.

Figure 3 If you have custom page numbering, as is common when you have front matter such as a table of contents (often numbered with lowercase roman numerals), you will need to set up the page numbering within Acrobat to match that of the page numbers shown in the PDF.

There are two more requirements for most of the features of Sonar Bookends Activate to work properly: the entire document must be contained in a single PDF and the pages numbers to activate or to which you wish to link, must be contained within the document.

Activating a table of contents

Sonar Bookends Activate is robust yet extremely easy to use. The power of this product lays in its batch processing and is especially useful to those of us who create documents with hundreds of pages (such as catalogues). Most long documents have a table of contents and or an index. Using the table of contents feature, you can easily auto-generate links to the pages numbers referenced by the listings in the table of contents — this is also true of the indexing feature.

To automatically create links from the page numbers listed in the table of contents to the referenced page, follow the steps below. One thing to keep in mind before you get started generating links for either a table of contents or an index is that both the table of content (or index) must be in the same document as the pages that are referenced.

Open a large PDF (a product manual is a great example).

 

Go to advanced > activate > table of contents.

In the resulting dialogue box, type the physical location of the page where your table of contents begins (ignore any frontmatter page numbering).

Type in the number of pages that the table of contents span. In some cases this may be only one page.

Optionally, you may at this point also choose to define a color underline for the page numbers that have been activated. This is a visual indicator to your document's reader that the page number is a live link and that if they click it, they will be transported to the referenced page.

Click OK.

 

Sonar Bookends Activate will now create a live link for each of the page numbers and provide a dialogue box report of how many links were generated. If you save the document, your table of contents can be used for easy one-click navigation.
