Sonar Bookends Activate
Page 3
Activating index links
To generate an index, the same rule applies. The index must be in the same document as the pages that are referenced. Sonar Bookends Activate is capable of handling both individual page numbers and a series of page numbers (as shown in figure 7), as long as they are separated by commas. Page ranges, when separated by hyphens, should be indicated as such in the dialogue box shown in figure 5.
To generate links for an index, follow these steps:
Go to advanced > activate > index...
Type in the physical page on which the index begins
Type in the number of pages that the index spans.
If you have used hyphen to separate page number ranges, check the box to indicate that you have done so.
If you prefer to have visual indicators underline the linked page numbers, choose this option and select a color.

Figure 6 To activate the links within an index, first set the physical page number on which the index starts and then how many pages the index spans. If you are using Acrobat 8, you may optionally assign a visual indicator underline (as seen in figure 7).
Click OK.
At this point, Sonar Bookends Activate will begin activation each page number. My sample document was very long, so it took several minutes.

Figure 7 To activate the links within an index, first set the physical page number on which the index starts and then how many pages the index spans.
Once complete, I received a dialogue box verifying the success and the number of entries that were activated.

Figure 8 Once you have activated the links, mousing over the page number prompts the pointing-finger cursor — the universal symbol for an active link. I have chosen to underline my pages numbers with blue visual indicators.
In my example, I find the blue underlines to be disruptive, but I have to admit that most people who receive this type of document would not realize that the pages numbers were linked, so adding this visual indicator is helpful.
