Extensis Universal Type Server

Figure 2 The web-based user management application means that administrators can manage the server from anywhere.
Universal Type Server and the publishing user
The designer and desktop publisher will love everything the Universal Type client has to offer: font sets, font classifications, incredible search features, smart sets, shared sets, keywords for fonts, and gorgeous customizable previews. Ironically, though, many users will never see the client. That's because the Universal Type auto-activation Plug-in does such a good job of automatically activating precisely the right fonts.

Figure 3 The Universal Type client provides quick access to fonts through workgroups, shared sets, smart sets, and individual font sets. The quick-find field and the search features make it easy to find fonts or collections of fonts, and the quick-type feature makes customizing previews a snap.
Auto activation
In Universal Type Server, fonts are organized into workgroups. Each user can access fonts in the workgroups to which he or she belongs. When you open a document, the Plug-in runs out to the server and automatically activates the right fonts in the workgroup. (OK, it's not that simple. You may be working offline and the XTensions software may be activating cached fonts; but the end result is the same.) With a proper configuration — meaning the fonts the document needs are in the workgroup(s) selected — you should never see a missing-fonts alert.
