Thomas AllenThomas Allen, was senior product analyst for QuarkXPress and has more than 20 years’ experience in the publishing industry. Allen has served as director of technology integration for The Think Tank (T3), implementing QPS and QCM, and served as director of technology for I.M.A.G.E., Inc., in New York.

Trevor AlynTrevor Alyn manages the Quark editorial department in Denver. He has been a QuarkXPress user since 1987 and has worked for Quark for over ten years. In his spare time, he enjoys reading and creating really strange things in Photoshop.

Kelly Kordes AntonKelly Kordes Anton is the editor of Colorado Expression magazine, garnering publishing insight from behind the scenes. She uses this knowledge to write books, articles, and marketing pieces about publishing software. A former Quark employee, she remains loyal to QuarkXPress but has written books on InDesign as well. Kelly has an 11-year-old Littleton hockey player and a 6 year old who punches him. 

Tim BanisterTim Banister general manager of desktop technology at Quark, Inc., has more than 20 years of commercial printing, prepress, and lithography experience. He has been with Quark for over eight years and manages the release of QuarkXPress software, the company’s flagship desktop-publishing product. Banister serves on the advisory boards for two standards organizations, Print On Demand Initiative (PODi) and Networked Graphic Production (NGP). In addition, Banister has been a prepress manager, graphic designer, and instructor for QuarkXPress, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe Photoshop.

Matt BargellMatt Bargell is a freelance graphic designer and art director. Starting his design career at Quark, Inc. in 1989, Matt took part in various design projects including the original splash screen and product icons for both QuarkXPress 3.0 and QPS (Quark Publishing System) and ultimately Quark's corporate logo. He went on to design and art direct the previous incarnation of X-Ray Magazine before moving to Paris, France where he taught desktop publishing and graphic design at the American University of Paris. Matt continues to design freelance for companies such as, Quark, PANTONE, and XChange France.

Stephen BealsStephen Beals has been working in pre-press for nearly 30 years and has written hundreds of articles for dozens of printing magazines including the previous incarnation of X-Ray Magazine. He is pre-press manager at Finger Lakes Press in Auburn, NY, and is the author of A Practical Primer for Painless Print Production. He has been a moderator and panelist at several VuePoint Conferences and is a contributing writer for the Seybold Report and workflow columnist for Big Picture. His work currently appears in half a dozen printing magazines.

Roger BlackRoger Black is a well-known U.S. publication designer, who has worked on newspapers and magazines around the world from a small strategic studio in New York, Roger Black Studio. Clients have included MIT Technology Review, Budget Living, Adweek, The Rocky Mountain News, The Nation (Bangkok), and the web site for the Brookings Institution. Over the last 16 years, Roger Black and his teams have rebuilt many prestigious magazines and newspapers, including Reader's Digest, Esquire, Premiere, Kompas (Jakarta), and Tages Anzeiger (Zurich). Now at work on a "design autobiography," Black wrote Web Sites that Work (1995) and Desktop Design Power (1989). Recipient of a distinguished alumnus award from the University of Chicago in 1997, Black lives in Manhattan, Pass-a-Grille, Florida, and Tesnus, Texas.

Joe CaponsaccoJoseph Caponsacco, currently with Insider Software, has been an active member of the graphic design community since completing design studies at The School of Visual Arts in Manhattan, NY, in 1991. After 12 years of service in the print and web industries and attaining the level of creative director at an entertainment company, Caponsacco joined Quark, Inc., as the Northeast Regional Consultant for QuarkXPress desktop solutions.

John CruiseJohn Cruise is a Denver-based writer, trainer, and coauthor of The QuarkXPress 4 Bible and QuarkXPress 4 for Dummies. In his past he was the editor of this magazine (in its previous incarnation), and is pleased that it is being published again.

Cheryl Dangel Cullen is a freelance writer, public relations consultant, and author of 15 books on marketing and graphic design, including Challenging the Big Brands: How New Brands Win Market Share with Innovative Designs. She writes for a variety of business-to-business, consumer, and non-profit companies and provides writing support to many advertising and public-relations firms. She lives outside of Chicago.

Ralph EberhardRalph Eberhard comes from a background in fine arts and photography from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Initially he began working with digital imaging and color applications for film restoration. Entering the design world, Eberhard worked with many companies creating web site designs with Flash, HTML, and CSS layouts. While continuing with web-site creation, Eberhard has recently focused on print projects from logo creation to commercial layouts.

Sophia FarinaSophia Farina has 15 years of experience in digital-publishing solutions and brings her knowledge of variable-data publishing solutions that spans software, hardware, and automated-document workflows to Quark. She has spoken at many industry events and has presented product strategies and briefings to large enterprise customers around the world. Prior to joining Quark, Sophia directed the worldwide software partner program for IBM Printing System Division.

Jonathan FermanJonathan Ferman has had a wide and varied career including working at Apple, Kodak, and Adobe. Ferman has worked with creative professionals for many years and written several articles and how-to guides for MacFormat magazine. Ferman’s previous role at Quark, Inc., involved extensive on-site testing, workflow analysis, and taking feedback on current and future features for QuarkXPress. He now works for Adobe and continues to enjoy presenting tips and tricks at tradeshows and events.

Linda FoegenLinda Foegen is the owner and manager of LinMark Design, a design and composition company started in 2000 that also produces college math books as a specialty. Foegen has been in the book-design industry since 1988, beginning in XyVision. Transferring to the Mac in 1991, she has worked with the York’s XMath, PowerMath, and continuing on now with XPressMath.

Steve GraySteve Gray is a journalist and photographer who began writing about graphical tools in 1992, when he was hired into Quark, Inc.'s editorial department. During his five years with the company, he wrote numerous customers’ newsletter articles about illustration, imaging, and custom typography with QuarkXPress. Gray’s writing appears in the QuarkXPress 6 Bible published by Wiley Publishing, and his Denver-based photography studio contributes to X-Ray Magazine.

Matthias GuentherMatthias Guenther is senior product manager for Quark’s desktop division. In this role, Guenther was responsible for the release of Quark Interactive Designer. Before joining Quark in 1997, Guenther worked four years as a layout artist for print products, and pioneered in new media by creating several web sites and multimedia CDs since 1994. Guenther has also written, with Samuel Huegli, two bestsellers about QuarkXPress 4 and 5.

Laureen HarrisLaureen Harris is a freelance writer and software-usability specialist. In 1997, Laureen joined Quark’s nascent enterprise solutions team as lead writer. Starting in 1998, she wrote a twice-monthly, front-page column for the Quark web site. After leaving Quark, Inc., Laureen has managed content, designed user interfaces, and written for Fortune 500 companies, small businesses, and non-profit organizations. She’s served as an advocate and champion for software users for 15 years.

Davina HicksDavina Hicks is a market-development analyst with eight years’ experience dealing directly with customers. Hicks has served in various capacities throughout her career at Quark, Inc. In her current role, Hicks works as a liaison with customers and the various levels of Quark’s internal management team to ensure that the customer’s voice is heard.

Marc HorneMarc Horne is senior product marketing manager for QuarkXPress, at Quark, Inc. His main job responsibility is tracking the present and future needs of Quark’s customers to guide product development. Before taking his current position, Horne designed workflow processes for major publishing companies worldwide.

Nick HowardNick Howard, director of the QuarkXPress Server team, first worked for Quark Europe from 1994 – 2000. Beginning his career at Quark in 1994 in the technical support department, Howard eventually worked his way to become the European marketing manager by 1998. In 2000, Howard left Quark and spent four years working in the wireless and integrated-marketing space. During this time, Howard built up a sound knowledge about data and analytics, and how this can be used to drive integrated-marketing campaigns across print, web, email, and mobile. Howard returned to Quark in early 2005 to unleash his knowledge about QuarkXPress and integrated marketing on the QuarkXPress Server technology group.

Nick HowardErnie Jones spent eight years at Quark. He joined ThePowerXChange and X-Ray Magazine in 2005. While at Quark, he became an expert in QLA and also managed SIs and OEMs within the QuarkAlliance program.

Toni KaufmannToni Kaufmann is CEO of e-nvention ag, a small, Swiss software-development company. Toni has used QuarkDDS for more than four years and started programming for the product when it was still in its alpha version stage and its codename was APS. Over the last few years, Toni Kaufmann’s company has developed numerous enhancements and applications for and around QuarkDDS and now QuarkXPress Server 7.

Tom KellyTom Kelly, an account manager at Quark, Inc., calls on major Quark customers in the southeast United States; he’s been in the publishing and printing industry for over 20 years. Kelly has hands-on experience in four-color print design, production, and printing as well as converting print media to electronic media for content syndication.

Erika KendraErika Kendra is a freelance designer and writer in Los Angeles, California, specializing in page layout for commercial printing. She is the author of six books about Quark products, including the QuarkXPress 7: Creating Digital Documents. Working with Against The Clock, she was also instrumental in developing the Quark Certified Expert program.

Jerry KennellyJerry Kennelly was founder and CEO of Stockbyte, a leading creator of royalty-free stock photography. Kennelly, a former photojournalist leads the world’s most prolific global stock-photo creative teams. He has led the conception and creation of more than 100,000 images since 1997. Under his direction, Stockbyte pioneered the introduction of color management in stock photography, allowing his clients across the world to view their images accurately by using the embedded ICC profiles. He has developed color-retouching systems to consistently deal with the vast number of images produced each year.

Margot Knorr ManciniMargot Knorr Mancini is president and owner of Technology for Publishing, a consulting firm that specializes in publishing and content-workflow process, applied tools and technology, best practices, and publishing strategy. For over twenty years, Margot has been helping publishers in various markets to work more efficiently. Her understanding of the publishing business and culture, as well as technology, provides a unique perspective and approach to assessing the needs and requirements of an organization.

Jürgen KurzJürgen Kurz, former senior vice president of Quark’s desktop business unit directed worldwide product management and development of Quark’s award-winning desktop-publishing products, including Quark’s flagship product QuarkXPress. Kurz joined Quark in 1997 and has played a key role in steering the evolution of the company’s award-winning suite of desktop, workgroup, and enterprise publishing software in a variety of executive positions. Before joining Quark in 1997, Kurz spent over five years in the German publishing industry as a pioneer in the development of numerous print and electronic products. Kurz holds a media design degree from the Graphic Arts School, Munich, Germany, and a product marketing degree (Werbekaufmann) from the Industrie und Handelskammer (IHK) in Munich, Germany. Kurz is based in Denver, Colorado.

Louis LandaLouis Landa worked in sales, marketing, and QuarkXPress product management at Quark, Inc., for eight years. In addition, he managed the QuarkXPress 6 pre-release program. Before joining Quark, Landa worked as a designer at two daily newspapers in the Denver area.

Doug LilesDoug Liles until January 2008, Liles was a member of the Quark sales team in the role of account executive in the OEM sales division. Liles holds a bachelor of arts from California State University Long Beach and a certificate in direct marketing from Loyola Marymount University. Liles has also performed speaking engagements related to online marketing, workflow strategy, and digital imaging to trade industry groups at industry events.

Sam LittSamuel A. Litt is an Apple Certified Technical Coordinator 10, 10.2, and 10.3, as well as a member of the Apple Consultants Network. He has provided Macintosh service and support for a diverse client base, including the Computer Investigations unit at the NYPD, Ralph Lauren, Swatch, MVBMS Euro RSCG, Time Warner, Inc., MTV Networks, Hearst Publications, Scholastic Publications, Verizon Yellow Pages, Quark, Inc., The Nathan Cummings Foundation, The Blue Rock Editing Company, Click3X, Red Car NY, and TBWA/Chiat/Day. Frank RomanoFrank Romano has over 40 years in the printing and publishing industries. A professor emeritus at (RIT) Rochester Institute of Technology, Romano is also the author of 40 books, editor of the International Paper Pocket Pal, contributor to major encyclopedias and dictionaries, and the author of numerous articles. Romano has founded eight publications, serving as publisher or editor or both for TypeWorld, Computer Artist, Color Publishing, The Typographer, EP&P, and both the NCPA and PrintRIT Journals. Romano wrote the first report on on-demand digital printing in 1980. He has been quoted in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Times of London, USA Today, Business Week, Forbes, and many other newspapers and publications, as well as on TV and radio.

Joe RootJoe Root has been supporting publishers for the last ten years. He started his tech career as a web application developer and slowly migrated to IT, production workflow, and operations management. Root joined Quark, Inc., in 2004 and worked as the manager for the US desktop technical services team before joining the DPS product team.

Cyndie ShaffstallCyndie Shaffstall is publisher, editor, and contributing author to X-Ray Magazine. She began her career working in print and type shops. At the introduction of the Macintosh to the print industry in the mid-80s, Shaffstall became a corporate trainer helping print-shop professionals adopt and adapt to the Mac. She has authored or co-authored many books on computer software, and self-published her first, QuarkXPress: Making the Most of Your Negative Experiences and her most recent, QuarkXPress 8: production tricks and experts' tips. In 1995, Shaffstall founded ThePowerXChange, a software-distribution company dedicated to extensions technology. In addition to ThePowerXChange, Shaffstall is the managing member of StrappyArt, LLC, the distributor of StrappyArt, a product that she invented in 2006. Christopher SmithChristopher Smith has more than 15 years of electronic publishing experience, Christopher provides business strategy and change management consulting services to communications professionals and publishers. Educated as a journalist, he works extensively with magazine and newspaper clients who are migrating to InDesign and InCopy and also with clients implementing electronic document review processes with Adobe Acrobat. Smith regularly speaks at events and conferences around the world.

Leith SpeightsLee Speights’ career leads with development of imaging and graphic technology sales. His contacts with this market are longstanding, with customers such as Disney, Warner Brothers, and Fox, to name a few. He has spent many years with Radius, Inc., starting in 1995 as senior business development manager that included developing large accounts in the entertainment, movie, and publishing industries, the digital content-creation industry, as well as enterprise and technical imaging markets. In this position, he also managed resellers and opportunities in the retail channel. Speights has also served as senior sales engineer at Radius where he was responsible for professional products in print and video fields. Previously, he has worked in the service field creating training programs for several companies, including Sun Computer and Priority One Electronics. Lee’s technical understanding of color-imaging application is considerable.

Tami StodghillTami Stodghill is the press-relations manager, for world-wide extensible-technology distributors London-based XChange International and US-based ThePowerXChange.com. She has been in the graphics design and publishing industry for 18 years and makes her home in Page-Lake Powell, Arizona, where she enjoys boating and reading.

Hugh TaylorHugh Taylor is a Harvard MBA who has held a variety of marketing-related positions helping companies implement campaigns, programs, and technology to achieve their goals. Taylor is based in Beverly Hills, CA.

Glen TurpinGlen Turpin has held many positions in product management and marketing and later became Quark’s director of corporate communications during his ten-year tenure with the company. Ben WaldieBenjamin S. Waldie is president of Automated Workflows, LLC, a company offering AppleScript and workflow-automation consulting to Macintosh-based businesses. Over the years, Waldie has developed professional AppleScript-based solutions for a wide range of businesses, including Adobe, Apple, NASA, PC World, Time Magazine, and TV Guide. Brad WalrodBrad Walrod is the author of QuarkXPress Unleashed: Power Techniques to Make You a Virtuoso, and has contributed articles to magazines such as Macworld, MacUser, eXPressions, and the original X-Ray Magazine. He has been a typesetter since 1978, specializing in books, magazines, directories, annual reports, tabular material, and nearly anything that comes from a database or a client’s disk. Brad has been using, writing about, and teaching QuarkXPress for the past 16 years.

John ZimmererJohn Zimmerer has managed the identification and development of emerging markets and technologies for the X-Rite’s core color business. Zimmerer joined X-Rite from Apple Computer, Inc., where he held the position of color and imaging product marketing manager. In this role Zimmerer established the key feature requirements that lead the development of Apple’s color and imaging technologies, including Image Capture, ColorSync, Quartz, and printing technologies in the Mac OS X desktop operating system. Prior to joining Apple, Zimmerer was founding partner and general manager of Mac Solutions, LLC, and Precision CPS, LLC, in Baltimore, Maryland. Zimmerer has a BA from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. He is a member of Society of Motion Picture & Televisions Engineers (SMPTE), Photo Marketing Association (PMA), and Digital Imaging Marketing Association (DIMA).
